Veterinary Dental Care

Did you know that most pets show signs of dental disease by age three? At Oaklawn Animal Hospital, we’re passionate about protecting your pet’s oral health—and their overall wellness. Our dental services are designed to detect, treat, and prevent periodontal disease in dogs and cats of all ages.

Why Dental Care Matters

Dental disease doesn’t just affect your pet’s breath—it can lead to pain, tooth loss, and even impact vital organs like the heart and kidneys if bacteria enter the bloodstream. Regular dental care keeps your pet healthier, happier, and pain-free.

Common signs of dental disease include:

  • Bad breath
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Yellow or brown buildup (tartar)
  • Difficulty eating or chewing
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Drooling or tooth loss

If you notice any of these signs, your pet may need a dental evaluation.

We offer comprehensive oral health care, including:
  • Dental exams
  • Routine cleanings
  • Digital dental x-rays (radiographs)
  • Simple and complex tooth extractions
  • Preventive guidance for at-home dental care

During every annual exam, our veterinarians evaluate your pet’s teeth and recommend personalized oral health strategies—like brushing, dental treats, special diets, or water additives.

How We Treat Dental Disease

If dental disease is present, we may recommend a professional cleaning and x-rays under general anesthesia. This allows us to thoroughly clean above and below the gum line, remove plaque and tartar, polish teeth, and apply fluoride. Digital radiographs help us detect issues hidden beneath the gum line, such as infections or root damage.

Pets receive IV fluids and are closely monitored throughout the procedure to ensure their safety and comfort. Most dental patients go home the same day with appropriate pain relief or antibiotics, if needed.

If advanced dental care—such as a root canal or crown—is required, we may refer your pet to a board-certified veterinary dentist.
